Tom was born in Ashburton and was a miner in Runanga in 1912 when he travelled to New Plymouth and won the 1912 Round the Mountain 100 mile cycle race.
In 1915 he and others including members of the first Labour Government cabinet founded the West Coast Anti-conscription league. But as casualties mounted Tom wound-up his volunteering to make sure he wasn't himself conscripted.
